Half term information Autumn 2 2024

We stepped back in time this half term to ‘The Great War’, the children were really engage in the topic and our trip to the Great War Huts gave us a fully immersive experience of life in the trenches. During our learning on this fascinating topic, we explored the conditions that the soldiers had to endure in the trenches of the Western Front, as well as the actions that started World War One. Using the book ‘War Games’ as the stimulus, we used drama to re-enact the events of Christmas 1914 (the Christmas truce), which was then turned into a retelling in English.

In Maths, we have spent most of the half term covering various elements of fractions, including equivalent fraction, converting between improper and mixed numbers (and vice versa), and multiplying and dividing fractions. The half term finished with a short unit on measures, which focused on converting between metric and imperial units of measure.

In science, the children have enjoyed learning all about the human circulatory system. Particular highlights were making blood soup, in which equivalents of the four main elements of blood were mixed together, and investigating the effects of exercise on heart rate.

The children loved using all of the gymnastics equipment in the main hall for PE and enjoyed tag ruby and netball.

Quotes from the children about their learning:

"This half term we have learnt about fractions. I found multiplying the easiest. We learnt about them for 35/356 of a year." Alastair

"My highlight of this term in topic has been the school trip where we went to the Great War huts. I would totally recommend it to anyone." Leila

"We recreated the blood in our body. We replaced plasma with orange juice, salt and minerals with just salt, the red blood cells with red cherries, white blood cells with mini marshmallows, and finally platelets with rice. We mixed them up and made a blood soup for this project." Soha
