Half term information Autumn 2 2024

In Topic this half term, we have travel back in time to September 1666 to discover all about the events of The Great Fire of London! We had a visit from The Trunk Theatre Company and thoroughly enjoyed joining in to act out the dramatic events of the fire. We learnt about Samuel Pepys and the diary he kept and wrote our own diary entries from the perspective of a child in London 1666.

In Art, we have explored the many shades and tones of flames. We designed our own candle from oil pastels, created a backdrop of tissue paper flames, and added a silhouette of London Tudor houses.

In Science, we extended our knowledge of everyday materials and noted some of their properties. We then used this information to decide the suitability of those materials for making different objects – such as windows. We conducted investigations to discover which materials are able to be stretched, twisted, squashed, or bent, and thought about why these are useful properties.

In RE this half term, we have been learning about gift giving, in connection to the Christian celebration of Christmas! We studied a variety of ways people prepare for Christmas during advent and considered presents we can give that we cannot see: such as kindness and love. We also recognised that there are many people who do not celebrate Christmas and discussed different reasons for, and ways of celebrating, during the winter period

Children’s comments about their learning:

“They did not have electricity or plastic in 1666, so they had to use different materials.”
