Reading

Reading at Monkfield Park

Early Reading:

In Reception and Year 1, reading skills are predominantly taught through Read Write Inc. Phonics sessions. Children also have opportunities to engage in and read topic-based texts linking to their classroom learning. At least once a week, they have the opportunity to borrow a school library book and take this home to share with their parent/carers. Children following the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme in Year 2 and Year 3 are provided a phonics book to match the sound being studied for the duration of that week. Alongside this, they have the opportunity to borrow an Accelerated Reader library book of their choice to take home and enjoy.

Accelerated Reader:

From Year 2 to Year 6, children follow the Accelerated reader programme (see below for parent guide).

Guided Reading:

Guided Reading lessons begin in Year 2 and continue throughout KS2. Using Accelerated Reader as a guide, teachers are able to tailor books that are studied; provide a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts; and differentiate the level of reading materials provided. Reading comprehension is monitored through careful questioning based around a given text. The purpose of questioning may include: analysing vocabulary choices, making inferences, making predictions, explaining, retrieving information, sequencing and summarising texts.

Additional reading opportunities are incorporated into the weekly learning in a number of ways-

Reading for Writing and Topic:

Writing units provide opportunities for a variety of texts and genres to be shared and studied. Topic related books are also used to support learning in other lessons.

Reading for Pleasure:

Class books are regularly read at the end of the school day to encourage reading for pleasure. Reading clubs for KS1 and KS2 further embrace a love of reading within a relaxed atmosphere.

Reading at Home:

We encourage all children, at any stage of their Primary journey, to read regularly at home. In support of this, children from Years 2 – 6 are provided with a home Reading Record book to record their progress.
